การแข่งขันคณิตศาสตร์โอลิมปิกระหว่างประเทศ "International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)" เกิดขึ้นครั้งแรกเมื่อปี 1959 ที่ประเทศโมเนีย แต่ละประเทศส่งผู้แทน 6 คนและอาจารย์ผู้ควบคุมทีม 2 คน และผู้สังเกตการณ์ 1 คน

เกรดการตัดสิน ผู้ที่ไดคะแนนเกิน 50% ของผู้เข้าแข่งขันทั้งหมดจะได้รับเหรียญรางวัล โดยจะคิดเป็นอัตราส่วนดังนี้ ทอง : เงิน : ทองแดง : ผู้ที่ไม่ได้รับเหรียญรางวัล = 1 : 2 : 3 : 6
